Understanding your Solar On Grid Power plant savings and Net metering Bill

Are you trying to understand  the Net Metering Bill issued by your electricity company for your Solar On Grid power plant  - to check on the savings from the Solar power plant ?

Electric power is measured and billed in units ( kw-hr), A Solar Roof Top  On Grid power plant  produces power during daytime - these are called Solar Generation units usually measured by Solar Generation meter, and this power is first used by the Home or facility that has the Solar power plant any excess power from the solar power plant not used by the home is fed back to the Electricity Grid in case of Net metering solar power plants - this is referred as EXPORT . At night time or during cloudy daytime hours - the facility will get power from the Electricity GRID - this is referred as IMPORT.

In order to understand the monthly calculations lets begin with an example :

A.  Solar generation meter reading end of this month  was 300, while the reading for previous month end was 100 - so the Solar units produced this month was 300-100 = 200

The Electricity company calculates the Net Metering bill with these two values below :

B. Import reading at end of month was 250 units, while the previous month end reading was 150

So the  Import of units  for the month = 250-150 = 100

C. Export reading for the end of month was 125 units, while the previous month end reading was 50

So the Export of units for the month = 125-50 = 75

D. So, Under Net Metering Scheme - the electricity company will calculate Net import as

Import for the month - Export for the month =          100-75 =25 units

So these will be billable Energy for this month which will be charged under agreed rate per unit

( there could be other charges in the monthly bill - fixed charges, surcharges, tax ,etc)

To calculate the number of units consumed by the Home or facility for the month , its calculated as below  -

Net Import for the month ( Item B above) + Solar Generation units ( Item A) - Exported units (Item C)

The units consumed by the Home for the month = B+A-C  = 200+100-75  = 225 units
